Nyerere National Park

A Photographic Portfolio

It was a surprise to arrive at Nyerere Park (when I first visited, it was still the Selous Game Reserve). The combination of off-road safari and boat safari makes it unique.

Nyerere National Park offers an incomparable photographic safari experience, away from the tourist crowds.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the largest protected areas in Africa, famous for its intact ecosystems and extraordinary biodiversity.

During our photographic safari, we can capture with our lenses: elephants, lions, black rhinos, crocodiles, and an incredible variety of birds along the rivers and swamps.

Safaris on foot, by boat, and in vehicles indeed offer unique perspectives for photographing wildlife in authentic moments and spectacular scenes.

The scenic beauty, from savannas to wetlands and forests, along with the wealth of wildlife, makes Nyerere a dream destination for photographers and nature lovers.

About Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the vast Selous Game Reserve, is one of Tanzania’s largest and most pristine wilderness areas. Officially designated a national park in 2019 and named in honor of Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president, it covers an impressive 30,893 square kilometers. This makes Nyerere the largest national park in Africa and a haven for diverse wildlife, including some of the continent’s most iconic species.

The park is renowned for its remote, untouched landscapes, offering visitors a more secluded safari experience compared to the more frequented northern parks. Nyerere National Park is home to a wide array of animals, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, hippos, and a large population of African wild dogs, one of the most endangered species in Africa. The Rufiji River, which snakes through the park, serves as a lifeline, supporting not only the wildlife but also lush riverine forests and abundant birdlife.

Seasonal Changes and Wildlife Patterns

The seasonal changes in Nyerere National Park play a significant role in the movement and behavior of wildlife. The dry season, from June to October, is the ideal time for game viewing. During this period, the park’s vegetation dries out, making it easier to spot animals as they gather around the shrinking water sources, particularly along the Rufiji River and its tributaries. Elephants, giraffes, and buffaloes are commonly seen in large herds, while predators like lions and leopards follow their prey closely.

The wet season, from November to May, transforms the park into a lush, green paradise. The increased rainfall fills the rivers and lakes, creating a breeding ground for hippos and crocodiles. Birdwatchers will find this time particularly rewarding, as migratory birds arrive in large numbers, and resident species, such as the African fish eagle and the carmine bee-eater, are abundant. Although some areas become inaccessible due to flooding, the wet season offers a different, quieter safari experience with fewer visitors and dramatic landscapes.

Tips for Photographers Visiting Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is a photographer’s dream, offering a combination of rich wildlife, scenic landscapes, and river environments. Here are some tips for photographers visiting the park:

  1.    Maximize Early Morning and Late Afternoon Light: The golden hours, just after sunrise and before sunset, offer the best natural lighting for capturing the park's beauty. The soft light enhances the colors of both the landscape and wildlife.

  2.    Telephoto Lens for Wildlife: A telephoto lens is essential for wildlife photography in Nyerere. It allows you to capture close-up shots of animals from a distance, particularly for shy species like leopards and wild dogs.

  3.    Wide-Angle for River Scenes: The Rufiji River is one of the most scenic parts of the park. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the sweeping river views, particularly during sunset, when the water reflects the vibrant colors of the sky.

  4.    Protect Your Gear: Given the park’s remote location and occasional rains, ensure you have protective coverings for your camera and lenses, especially if you’re visiting during the wet season.
