Introduction to Tanzania's Premier Safari Destinations

Nyerere National Park: A Pristine Wilderness

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, is one of Tanzania’s hidden gems. This vast park is renowned for its undisturbed wildlife and enchanting riverine landscapes.

As you traverse through its territories, you are likely to encounter elephants, wild dogs, and a variety of bird species, all thriving in their natural habitats (Wikipedia) (Africa Geographic Travel) (ConservationWire).

Ruaha National Park: Land of Diversity

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest national park, known for its rugged landscapes and rich biodiversity.

It is particularly famous for its large populations of elephants and a diverse range of other wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, and over 570 bird species.

Ruaha's remote location adds to its charm, offering a more exclusive and less crowded safari experience.
The park's dramatic scenery, combined with the Great Ruaha River, provides spectacular game viewing and photographic opportunities (Wikipedia) (National Parks).

Our Photographic Safari

February in Nyerere and Ruaha

February falls during the wet season in both Nyerere and Ruaha National Parks, marking a time of rejuvenation for the landscape. Expect moderate rainfall, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. The weather can be humid, with temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) in the early mornings to highs of around 30°C (86°F) during the day. Rainfall often comes in brief but intense bursts, with sunny spells in between, allowing plenty of time for game drives and photography.

The rains bring lush, green vegetation, transforming the parks into vibrant landscapes. While the thicker foliage can make it slightly harder to spot wildlife compared to the dry season, the scenery is breathtaking, offering beautiful contrasts for photography. Birdlife also flourishes during this period, as migratory birds arrive in large numbers, making February ideal for bird enthusiasts.

One of the great advantages of visiting in February is the low number of tourists. This off-peak period means fewer vehicles in the parks, allowing a more tranquil and intimate experience. You’ll often have sightings of wildlife all to yourself, free from the crowds of the dry season. The lower visitor numbers also translate to reduced rates for accommodations and tours, making it a more cost-effective option.

In February, Nyerere and Ruaha deliver a serene, less-crowded safari experience, with vibrant landscapes and ample opportunities to capture unique wildlife moments in the rain-soaked beauty of Tanzania's wilderness.

Essential Tips for Aspiring Wildlife Photographers

  1.    Camera Equipment: Bring along a variety of lenses. A telephoto lens is essential for capturing distant wildlife, while a wide-angle lens can beautifully frame expansive landscapes.

  2.    Patience is Key: Wildlife photography demands patience. Sometimes, you may need to wait for hours for the perfect lighting or for an animal to make an appearance.

  3.    Respect the Wildlife: Always maintain a safe and respectful distance. Use your camera zoom to get close-up shots without disturbing the animals.

  4.    Learn from each other: Talk with your companion photographs and exchange experiences to improve your photographic skills.
